The Music Center of Woodstock
On August 1st, the Woodstock Music Shop will be moving its storefront location from 18 Rock City Rd, to 6 Rock City Rd. The new location will be in the center of Woodstock’s main street business district, next to the Woodstock Chamber of Commerce information booth and the newly opened Yum Yum Noodle Bar.
Though slightly smaller in size, the new Woodstock Music Shop will be stocked full of the things musicians and music lovers crave. Since taking over the shop just over a year ago, Jenn Miller & Jeff Harrigfeld have gotten a taste of what local customers want. “We see how specialized a music store needs to be”, said Harrigfeld. “We are focusing in on the types of products we feel our customer desires and needs.” And those customers should have no problem getting what they need with the Music Shop’s expanded store hours, 10am-8pm Sun-Thurs, & 10am-10pm Fri & Sat.
Along with the big move, Miller & Harrigfeld plan to create some community minded events and activities, some to take place right in front of the new store. “We would love to have some very intimate concerts take place on the new pavilion Yum Yum has created,” said Miller “mix good music and good food together & one should expect a magical environment.” Expect some great music; Harrigfeld has been busy producing the Concerts on the Green for the Woodstock Chamber of Commerce with over 50 acts performing this summer.
With its addition of new releases on CD and Vinyl, listening parties will be held, showcasing handpicked favorites of the Music Shop. “We may even show some of our favorite music documentaries and have workshops in the beautiful green space adjunct to the new shop,” commented Miller, “we want to bring some fun activities to the center of town.”
Looking to the future, Miller and Harrigfeld intend to offer a plethora of activities specifically for teens and children. “We have noticed a definite lack of youth minded things to do in Woodstock, we are working on plans to offer a handful of music themed events like concerts, workshops, classes; even things like kids karaoke and Rock Band and Guitar Hero contests with prizes in conjunction with Fern Malkine-Falvey at the Woodstock Youth Center.
Inside the new shop a quasi-recording studio will start to take shape. “I know a retail store might not be the best location for a recording studio,” said Harrigfeld, “but this will be a fully functioning studio and will allow people to see how easy creating music is, in any environment.” The studio will eventually be open to record simple demos for anyone under 18 for free.
