The Heritage Folk Music, Inc. (HFM) will be celebrating folk music history through their concert series, “From the Mountains to the Valley.”
HFM is a non-profit organization that focuses on the historical interpretation and preservation of folklore and folk music, mainly covering the Hudson River Valley and the Catskill Mountains. Under the direction of Bob Lusk, members are responsible for collecting unique, folk music-related memorabilia to adequately document the region’s folk music legacy.
Here’s a look at upcoming events already scheduled:
Jan. 18, Kiersted House, Saugerties: “Songs of the Hudson River.” Sailors share songs and tales of their voyages on the Hudson.
Feb. 15, Dutch Arms Chapel, Saugerties: “The Shape Note Singing of Louis Edson.” This workshop focuses on 19th century singing styles, including songs by Louis Edson.
Mar. 22, Kiersted House, Saugerties: “Irish Music of the Hudson Valley with Robert Huntley Burroughs.” Burroughs, an Irish Harp player, will share his views on the history of local Irish immigrants, while performing heritage music.
Apr. 19, Kiersted House, Saugerties: “Regional Fiddle Styles of the Catskills and Hudson - Hilton and Stella Kelley.” The Kelleys share stories about life and music in the Catskills.
May 17, Dutch Arms Chapel, Saugerties: “Historic Hudson Valley Characters.” Performed by Rich Bala, this segment features songs and stories of Henry Backus, a.k.a. The Saugerties Bard.
Jun. 21, Kingston Waterfront: "The Hudson Crew." The Kingston Sea Chantey Singers perform songs about the Hudson River and Henry Hudson.
Jul. 19, Phoenicia Railroad Station: “Songs of the Great Catskill Mountain Railroads.” Jim Donnelly, Ira McIntosh and The Sidewinders perform songs about historic railroads in Ulster County.
Aug. 16, Kiersted House, Saugerties: “Songs and History of the Huckleberry pickers of the Shawangunk Mountains.” This workshop will be moderated by historian Mark Fried.
Jan. 17, 2010, Dutch Arms Chapel, Saugerties: “Local Black History in Song.” This workshop focuses on the local African American influence in music, from colonial times to present.
Feb. 21, 2010, Dutch Arms Chapel, Saugerties: “Music of the Founding Parents.” Musical contributions from all over the region will be the focus of this segment.
Mar. 21, 2010, Dutch Arms Chapel, Saugerties: “Irish Dances 1940- 1960.” This segment features Joan McGrenaghan and her “Joanie Mac” School of Irish Step Dancing.
Unless otherwise noted, concerts take place on Sundays, from 3-5 p.m.
